Images of Native Americans : The Bancroft Library
The Bancroft Library presents "Images of Native Americans," a digital companion to an exhibit of rare books, photographs, illustrations, and other archival and manuscript materials that debuted in the Fall of 2000, to celebrate the acquisition of the University of California, Berkeley Library's nine millionth volume. A special section is devoted to James Otto Lewis' Aboriginal Portfolio, the first color plate book with images of American Indians published in the United States. The portion of the exhibit devoted to this historic volume includes an essay written by Anthony Bliss, Curator of Rare Books and Literary Manuscripts, detailing the intrigue often associated with the acquisition of rare items and an introductory essay on the publication history of this landmark work.

Mathers Museum: Wanamaker Collection of Photographs of American Indians
The Wanamaker Collection consists of over 8000 images of American Indians made between 1908 and 1923 by Joseph K. Dixon. The Wanamaker Collection can serve a variety of research interests. The primary ethnographic and historical value of the collection is as a record and reflection of American Indian life in the first decades of the 20th century. By the sheer quantity of photographs, the collection presents a wide view of Indian life, including several dimensions of culture change (documenting clothing decoration, dance styles, etc.), economic situation (relative wealth/poverty), and acculturation/participation in the non-Indian world, including the military.

Reading Historic Photographs - Pawnee
Historic photographs of American Indians, long used simply as images or as illustrations, can be sources of ethnographic and historical information, particularly about aspects of material culture. In documenting artifact use and distribution, photographs can supplement museum collections, which often lack that information. Moreover, while an individual photograph is a singular record of a moment in time, a group or series of photographs is a record across time and space, and can expand the information potential of photographic interpretation.
