Native American Research in Michigan
Before the arrival of the first white man, Michigan was inhabited by 15,000 Indians, members of the Miami, Chippewa, Menominee, Ottawa, Potawatomi and Wyandot tribes. Today the number is considerably less. While it is often difficult to trace Native ancestry it is not impossible.

The African - Native Genealogy Homepage
It is known that many Africans intermarried with Native Americans. Less widely known is the fact that many Native Americans also owned African slaves, and fathered children with African slave women. As a result, thousands of Americans have black and Indian ancestry. This page is dedicated to the freedmen of Indian Territory--now Oklahoma, who were the former slaves and free persons of color in the Five Civilized Tribes.

The Oklahoma Historical Society Archives - The Indian Archives
The Indian Archives consists of federal Indian records placed in the society's custody in 1934 by act of Congress. Containing over 3.5 million documents and some 6,000 plus volumes, it represents 66 of the 67 tribes that either were relocated to Oklahoma by forced removal or who are native to the state. Most principal of the collection will be the records of the Five Civilized Tribes (FCT). These records of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole date from ca. 1856 to 1906. The national records of these tribes contain primary documentation of the executive, legislative and judicial branches as well as district and county records. Extensive information about agriculture, census, citizenship, education, Indian-white relations, law enforcement and a variety of aspects of life in Indian Territory can be found in these documents. A $20.00 research fee is required for all out-of-state inquries. The in state fee is $5.00.
