University of Canterbury Maori Department
The Department of Maori was established at the University of Canterbury in 1974 under the late Te Awaroa Nepia. Te Awaroa established a centre for studying and translating the Maori literary heritage, and our traditional strength has been in the area of nineteenth century language and thought, which are studied from manuscripts written by Maori in the nineteenth century.
