Rod Michano
Rod Michano, known traditionally as 'Waaseyaa Nimkii-bineshin Migizi-nini' (Shining Thunderbird Eagleman), originates from the Pic River Ojibway First Nation, near Thunder Bay in northern Ontario.
Diagnosed HIV+ in 1987, Rod has since been involved in a number of initiatives to raise the profile of HIV/AIDS among Aboriginal people.
Rod was the subject of an awareness poster campaign for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation in 1994. In 1997, during a six month stay at Casey House Hospice in Toronto, Rod was the subject of an educational video for HIV/AIDS prevention for young people. He is also an HIV/AIDS educator and has spoken publicly about his experiences as a speaker with the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation since 1998. He is also a frequent contributor to the yearly Toronto AIDS Candlelight Vigil. Presently, Rod works as a public speaker, HIV educator and culture-based support to other People Living with HIV/AIDS. He is also frequently called upon by his local community to conduct Traditional ceremonies, and is a much-valued support and advocate for all People Living with HIV/AIDS, on both a local and national level.
