Trent University Native Studies Department
The Native studies program at Trent University is the oldest of its kind in Canada. It was established in 1969
to provide appropriate education for native people to teach non-native students about native cultures and the native situation in Canada. Starting in 1989, Trent was also the first Canadian University to offer an Honours year in Native Studies. Trent now offers a
Master of Arts degree in Native Studies, also the first program of its kind in Canada. In addition, we offer two year diploma programs in Native Studies and in
Native Management and Economic Development, and the Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Native Management and Economic Development.

Yellowhead Tribal Council Education Program
The Yellowhead Tribal Council Education Program originated with the need for
locally controlled community-based programs. Responding to the increased
demands for higher education, five member First Nations developed educational
programs dedicated to the removal of barriers that otherwise might restrict Y.T.C.
members' educational opportunities.
